Yesterday we took the cutest little tram out to Arashiyama to visit: Tenryu-ji temple and Sogenchi Garden, the Bamboo forests and Adashino Nenbutsuji Temple. Despite the blazing heat and humidity it was a magical day…and I got my plant and forest fix 🤎💚

Nature weaving is one of the activities in my ther

Nature weaving is one of the activities in my therapeutic horticulture program, Flourish.

Today I ran this sensory and creative activity with this wonderful group of older adults. They couldn’t have been more engaged, creative and super delightful to be with!

One of the support team told me, during other activities people can get distracted, get up and down from the table or start wandering….but today nature weaving captivated them and all stayed engaged and seated for the whole activity. 😁

I use a combination of methods to manage slugs and

I use a combination of methods to manage slugs and snails (reducing mulch and hiding spots in wet cool seasons, barriers made from copper tape on yoghurt containers, donning my slug hunting torch and patrolling late at night 😆). I’ve trialled these sheep’s wool pellets in spring and now autumn and these are one of my favourites!

Calcium vinegar extraction from eggshells.

I’ve been reading The Regenerative Grower’s Guide to Garden Amendments. It’s brilliant 🤩 including how to use resources (waste) that we have at hand, or can source to make biological and mineral homemade soil amendments. Yay!

I’ve recently made the calcium extraction. This method is much quicker at delivering calcium to plants than ground up eggshells, as the extraction makes the calcium water soluble. I added at bed preparation along with compost / homemade fertilisers and again when plants started budding, to support good flowering and fruiting.

Adding water soluble calcium can help sort out deficiencies like blossom end rot, which I had last year on my slicing tommies. Not taking any chances this year!

Materials:
10% clean eggshells by volume
90% vinegar by volume, white or homemade apple cider vinegar
Jar
Muslin or gauze
Rubber band

Method:
🥚 Lay shells out on a tray, pop in the oven at 150c for 20 minutes - to dry the shells and remove any organic residue. You want them just toasted but not burnt.
🥚Crush the shells when cool (they don’t need to be finely ground).
🥚 Add to the jar, cover with vinegar and stir with a with a plastic or wooden stirrer.
🥚 Leave around 3cm clearance at the top of the jar - it bubbles up!
🥚 Cover with cloth and a rubber band or pop the lid on loosely to allow it to gas off.
🥚 Pop in a dry, cool spot out of the sun for around 14 days and stir occasionally.
🥚 Strain off the liquid through gauze or fine sieve into a jar or wine bottle.
🥚 Add the shells to the compost or grind further to add into the worm farm.
🥚 Label and store in a ventilated spot in the shed.
🥚 It will store in the jar for a couple of years.

To use, dilute with rain water or filtered water at 1:500 soil drench or 1:1000 as a fine mist, foliar spray (that’s 1 tsp extract to 2.5 or 5 litres of water).
