My graft worked!! 🤩 Couldn’t be more Horticultural My graft worked!! 🤩 Couldn’t be more Horticulturally chuffed at this point.

Bucket list ✅

The Cox’s is on dwarf root stock, and the tree is planted in a wine barrel I converted to a wicking bed. I chose these two, as they are compatible pollinator varieties and will have quite distinct flavoured apples. Yippeee!

I’ve got this friend… Actually, numerous who will I’ve got this friend…

Actually, numerous who will text me on the reg:

What’s this plant? (photo of leaf). Where would this be happy? (photo of plant and the garden) Is this dead? (photo of crispy, brown leaves). Why are my lemon tree leaves yellow - did I kill it? (more photos of leaves). Why are the possums eating everything? (photos of chewed leaves, skinned lemons and crying emojis).

One of my very “enthusiastic” friends, will text me (at all hours) for the inside horty scoop, as she calls it, so…I bought her #therookiegardener.

It’s the book all horticulturists needed! (For their friends and family). I’m hopeful it will reduce the Hort text lessons and photos of…leaves 🤣

Thanks @fosteryourgarden ! A wonderful resource, full of super helpful info and really fun to read. 👏🏻 💚

On Parsnips…pro-tip below. I love Parsnips 🤍 esp On Parsnips…pro-tip below.

I love Parsnips 🤍 especially when they self-seed and grow without any real effort from me!

Parsnips can be a little tricky to grow sometimes. Firstly because you need very fresh seed, from the previous season. (The commercially sold seed is often older and germination rate is rubbish, very annoying). Secondly bc of their long germination time, in warm-ish soil, 2-4 weeks. The hardest part is keeping the soil moist for that long (depending on time of year). Other than that 🤣 they’re still worth it. 🤍

So, here’s a pro-tip I got from @provenancegrowers fab book Broccoli & Other Love Stories:

Once you have some parsnips growing, gently lift one out (the best one) when mature - you want as much of the root hairs intact for transplant. Immediately transplant into a prepared garden bed in an (obvs) deep hole. I chose the corner of a bed so it was out of the way and where I’d be happy for them to grow the following season. I removed around 1/3 of the foliage - it droops and looks done for, but be patient. Keep it moist, it will put on heeps of foliage, the stem will increase, and then boom, lots of lovely flowers (think carrot, queen anne’s lace - same fam). Once the seed develops and turns brown, harvest some, store for next season and let the rest do its thing .. self-seed and grow when they’re good and ready! Brilliant.

Then you get to smugly and excitedly thin them to around 20cm between plants and eat raw if you fancy. Let the rest become the nicest Parsnips you’ll ever eat. Fresh and yum.

Then do it all over again… 😆
